This is a temporary position until December 2014. It is a shared position between Learning Commons and Information Technology departments with primary reporting to the Chief Librarian. Stress from work pressure is moderate due to balancing LC and IT priorities as well as student and staff needs. High level of concentration required to solve technical problems. Exercises good judgment and follows guidelines when responding to problems. Works without direct supervision and works independently. Works closely with the Learning Commons and IT teams to coordinate smooth transition between day and evening service. Priorities are assigned by the Chief Librarian and Director of IT. Occasional overtime hours may be required. Some lifting (up to 10 kg) required.



Under the direction of the Chief Librarian and the Director of IT, the evening technician primary responsibility is to provide evening Learning Commons service and technical assistance to students, provide technical support for videoconferences and classrooms in the evenings. In addition to opening and closing responsibilities of the Learning Commons, the technician troubleshoots and analyzes problems to find solutions to computing issues. Circulates Learning Commons' materials and maintains an environment conducive to learning.



Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Learning Commons

•Respond to users in a courteous, friendly and helpful manner

•Monitor the appropriate use of the facilities and equipment in the Computer Lab and the Learning Commons, ensuring compliance with regulations;

•Provide assistance to users of the Computer Lab and the Learning Commons, including troubleshooting routine computer, printer, software, and access problems;

•Circulate Learning Commons materials (books, laptops, audiovisual) following UCQ procedures

•Complete special projects within set timelines, as assigned by Learning Commons



Information Technology

•Set up, assist, and troubleshoot videoconference calls

•Provide classroom technical support for evening and weekend classes

•Complete special projects within set timelines, as assigned by IT

•Works effectively with IT staff to troubleshoot IT problems



Communication

•Manage time effectively to carry out overall responsibilities within the Learning Commons and with the IT department

•Coordinate with daytime staff to troubleshoot problems



Facility Management

•Handle opening and closing of the Learning Commons and report facility problems to the appropriate unit;
